George Sherwood Amsbary, born January 6, 1920 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died quietly and peacefully in his sleep at home in Albuquerque, New Mexico on December 8, 1999 at 3:15 a.m. George was a life-long editor and publisher. In the 1960's, as Vice President and Executive Editor of the Childcraft Division of Field Enterprises World Book Encyclopedia, he spearheaded the development of the Rainbow Edition Childcraft that revolutionized the manner in which children's literature would be presented, making learning more accessible and attractive to children. Years later, in 1976, he left his job as New Mexico State Curriculum Director to take a job as Publisher for the Saudi Project under the Kissinger Peace Plan. Throughout his career, George met and worked with many notable people on publishing projects, including Senator and Astronaut, John Glenn and Norman Cousins whom he deeply respected. He is survived by his much-loved wife, Nora; sister, Susan and husband, Bill; daughter, Marjorie; son, Jonathan and wife, Kate; step-daughter, Sonja and husband, Ron; grandchildren, Robin and husband, Ralph, Joshua and wife, Kelly, Eric, Daniel, Leeann and Jacob; and great grandson, Scott. With everything he did, he inspired creativity in others. He always did the best that he could, never compromising its quality. Now he leaves that legacy of inspiration and quality for all those people who were touched by his life. Friends and family are invited to gather for a celebration of his life on Tuesday, December 14, 7:00 p.m., at the SGI Buddhist Community Center, 1911 Sunshine Terrace SE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87106.
