Obituary for Newton

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday October 19, 2000

LELA M. NEWTON Fondly referred to as the oldest living Lobo fan, passed away in her sleep early Tuesday morning. Born in 1895, she moved to Albuquerque in 1949, where she was employed by the IRS until her retirement from federal services. She then worked for the County Treasurer until she retired at the age of 83. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Lobo basketball team (past and present) for your kindness and time in decorating her room with Lobo memorabilia and the many exciting nights of Lobo games. Also thanks to the many fans for singing happy birthday to her in the Pit. This was one of her most fondest memories. I would like to also express my gratitude to the staff of Sunbridge Mission Manor for your tireless patience and gentle care, and to all of her friends who made her life brighter. Certainly not last, thank you Phyllis, you were a God send. She was loved by many and will be missed by ALL. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Strong-Throne and interment will be at a later date in Windsor, MO.
