Obituary for Humble

Ava Thelma Humble, 89, died Monday, October 16, 2000 at Lovelace Hospital in Albuquerque. Mrs. Humble lived in both Albuquerque and Durango, Colorado for the past 70 years. A Funeral service will be Friday, October 20, 2000, 2:00 p.m., at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Father Mike McCleary will be officiating and burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. Mrs. Humble was born in a blinding snowstorm on January 11, 1911 in Sawyer, Kansas, the daughter of Arthur and Anna Spain. Her ancestors, all farmers and preachers first came to the U.S. from the 1780's-1820's. Her grandfather and grandmother were deaf-mutes and Mrs. Humble learned sign language well, even demonstrating the sign language alphabet in her 89th year. Mrs. Humble's uncle was a Civil War veteran and was a survivor of the Andersonville, Georgia prison camp. Mrs. Humble was the captain of the Sawyer High School Basketball team in 1928 where she played forward and she served as president of her student council. She was also Maid of Honor in the Kansas Wheat Queen Contest in 1928. Mrs. Humble survived the Kansas dust bowl in the 1930's and the Great Depression in New Mexico in the 30's. In high school she saw her first radio and still remembers the first broadcast into Kansas. Mrs. Humble was a writer and had written a novel, a how-to book, and numerous short stories. She played piano and sax at one time and she had made her own soap and butter and canned her own food. She was a notable 4-H leader in the community and led that organization to several Drama State Champion titles, as well as the Nation Chessecake Contest Winners. Mrs. Humble won national honors for her role in the 4-H. Mrs. Humble had numerous other accomplishments such as passing both real estate and securities exams on her first try. She is survived by two sons, Arthur Burl Humble of Phoenix, AZ and Rod Humble of Durango, CO; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Humble; a son, Sidney Humble; and a great-granddaughter, Mallory Gonzales. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Senior Fund, La Plata County Humane Society, P.O. Box 2164, Durango, CO 81302. This fund assists in the care of pets belonging to senior citizens in La Plata County.
