Obituary for Hopkins

Louis Allen (Hoppy) Hopkins, Jr., 83, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946 died Wednesday, September 6, 2000. He is survived by his wife of 56 year, Mary Kate and B.J.; brother, Arthur S. Hopkins and wife, B. of Panama City, FL; and cousin, Rev. and Mrs. Paul Hopkins of Albuquerque. Mr. Hopkins was graduated from the University of Michigan in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. During WWII, Major Hopkins served in the Army Air Corps until 1945. He specialized in ground radar. He went on to complete his Masters in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan in 1946. Mr. Hopkins began a career with Sandia National Laboratories in 1946 that spanned more than three decades. During these years, Mr. Hopkins held positions as Director of Engineering II, and directorships of Component Development, Manufacturing Development, Electromechanical and Chemical Component Development, Space Power Systems, and Development Testing. In 1974, he assumed the position of Technical Staff Director until his retirement in 1977. Mr. Hopkins was a member of Eta Kappa Nu, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Tau Ti. He was also a member and former chairman of the Bernalillo County Planning and Zoning Commission, a member and former Vice-Chairman of the Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation Board, a member of the Council of Governments-Airport Advisory Committee, a member of the Corrales Fire Commission and a member and former Section Chairman of the IEEE. Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, September 19, 2000, 11:00 a.m. at San Ysidro Catholic Church with Father Clarence Galli as Celebrant.
