Obituary for Mercer

Lena Jean Mercer, a resident of Albuquerque for 33 years, passed away Saturday, September 2, 2000. She celebrated her 96th birthday, August 28, with family and friends at her home at Grand Court. Lena was born in 1904 in Iron Mountain, MI to Mary and Vincent Minucci and moved to Arizona with them in 1910. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; and one sister. As a young girl while working at Fort Whipple Hospital in Prescott, AZ, she met and married Lafe Mercer. They lived in Prescott for 45 years. Lena was a vice president of the Prescott Ladies Fire Auxiliary and belonged to the Prescott Elk Ladies. She was a wonderful cook and loved to bake cakes and cookies for her family and friends. Lafe preceded her in death in 1967, and Lena moved to Albuquerque to be close to her remaining family. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and she will be missed by all of her loving family, and the friends who knew and loved her. She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Eddleman and husband, Rueben; sons, Allen Mercer and wife, Helen and Harold Mercer and wife, Donna; granddaughters, Vickie Merrill and husband, Russ, Carol Hahn and husband, George, Janice Beyer and husband, Michael, Phyllis Fetherolf and husband, Ken, all of Albuquerque, Carla Mercer and husband, Michael Lesniak and Lynn Mercer, all of San Diego; grandsons, Harold Mercer and wife, Donna of Murfreesboro, TN, John Mercer and wife, Sherry of Willows, CA, Jerry Mercer and fiance, Mary of Las Vegas, NV and Lloyd Mercer of Jackson, MS; nieces, Helen Peters and husband, John of Scottsdale, AZ, Mary McClure of Oracle, AZ and Gayla King of Redlands, CA; sister-in-law, Olivia Minucci of Albuquerque; five great-granddaughters; seven great-grandsons; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. Lena was a member of Central United Methodist Church. Our special thanks to the staff and caregivers in Assisted Living at Grand Court whom she called"her angels" for the loving care they gave to her, and a special thanks to the nurses and staff at Quality Continuum Hospice for their compassion, consideration and understanding help. Services will be held Tuesday, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Dr. Charles Crutchfield officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE.
