Obituary for Eggert

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Saturday September 30, 2000

Anna S. Eggert, died Thursday, September 28, 2000 at home. Eight days before her 91st birthday. She was born on October 6, 1909 in York, PA to Joseph Schifani and Olga Gordon Schifani. She seemed to have some premonition because early in the morning, on September 27th she said to her son,"Maybe it is time for me to go". She came to Albuquerque in 1918. She resided most of her life in New Mexico. She often would reminisce about Albuquerque of the time past recalling the first traffic light, the trolley tracts, the first zoo and many of the old but now razed buildings. She was a contestant in naming the Kimo Theater. Her entry"The Kiva" did not win. On November 21, 1928, she married William E. Eggert in the old Immaculate Conception Church, Downtown. She and her beloved Bill were happily married for almost 65 years. In 1938, she and her husband purchased the Santa Fe Secretarial School. Then in 1944, while still operating the business college in Santa Fe, they purchased the Albuquerque Business College that had been founded in 1902. At that time, her husband joined her in teaching and managing the schools. Shortly thereafter they established the Eggert Radio and Electronic Institute. They sold the schools and retired in 1977. Retired life was never dull. Bill and Ann were often surrounded by the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Anna had a hobby that delighted many youngsters. She had started the hobby to entertain the grandchildren. Each year her home became a veritable toyland filled with Santa Clauses. Each year for Christmas she would display over 1000 Santa Clauses, including one seven feet tall. Her Christmas tree had more than 2000 miniature electric lights and 800-900 ornaments. The amazing part was they all got put away after the Feast of the Epiphany. Santa Clause was not the only thing on display. There are well over 100 religious paintings and statues on display all year. She was a deeply religious person. Right up to the end she never lost her faculties, sense of humor or control. The family often joked if she had her eyesight she would be driving and would be H--- on Wheels. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill and is survived by a son, Father Francis X. Eggert; daughters, Shirley M. Villa and husband, Charles and Phyllis N. Ables; two very close and special Godchildren, Peter G. Spehar and Joan H. Johnson; five grandchildren, Melodee Bero, Carole Jean Sullivan and husband, Daniel, Daniel Ables Sandlin and wife, Julie, Shirley Sandlin Tucker and husband, Tom, and Carla Villa and husband, Michael Bickel; seven great-grandchildren, Kristopher, Phillip and Kenneth Bero, Sara Sullivan, Ian and Eric Sandlin, and Charles Bickel; one sister, Pearl Mac Kenzie; two brothers, Ted Schifani and Daniel Schifani and wife, Dianne; one sister-in-law, Bertha Balling; and many nieces and nephews. Rosary will be prayed, Sunday, October 1st at 7:30 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Monday, October 2nd at 11:00 a.m. All services will be celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Church, corner of Lomas and Morningside.
