Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday February 18, 2000

Lottie Holbrook was born June 14, 1904, at Orchard, Nebraska and grew up on a farm east of Orchard, where she attended the Orchard Public School. After graduating high school, she attended Wayne College in normal training and began teaching school near Laurel, Nebraska, where she became acquainted with Earl Schuler. They eloped and were married September 10, 1926 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Earl was then employed in the Crossland State Bank and had a promising career ahead of him as they made their home in Laurel. Lottie and Earl were blessed with four sons, Donovan, Arlyn, and twin boys, Richard and Robert. The twins were born on Valentines Day, the only twins born on this day in the State of Nebraska. Tragedy struck the family when Earl was stricken and rushed to the hospital in Sioux City, Iowa and passed away on August 14, 1942. In 1949, Lottie married Maurice Grant, an acquaintance of the Schulers from Laurel, and around 1950, they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Maurice was employed by Sandia National Laboratories. Bob and Dick graduated from Highland High School in Albuquerque. Maurice was handy with tools and had a talent for remodeling houses so they moved a number of times after remodeling their homes. Lottie enjoyed crafts and among her talents did a beautiful china painting and artistic eggshell creations. After Maurice passed away in 1982, Lottie continued to live in Albuquerque and was often visited by her sisters, and family and friends, with her sons helping take care of the maintenance and chores around home. Mrs Grant was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and four sisters. She is survived by three sisters, Mina DeFreeze of Omaha, NE, Neala Whitehead of Phoenix AZ, and Elsie Mitchell of Norfolk, NE; four sons and daughters-in-law, L. Donovan Schuler and wife, Alice of Omaha, NE, Arlyn L. Schuler and wife, Martha of Belle Vista, AR, Richard E. Schuler and wife, Mary, Robert L. Schuler and wife, Emily, all of Albuquerque; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
