NORMA RUNYAN September 23, 1905 - February 7, 2000 Private family committal services for Norma Runyan, 94, of Natchez, who died Monday, February 7, 2000, in Ferriday, LA, will be held at Redman Cemetery in DeQueen, Arkansas. Miss Runyan was born September 23, 1905 in Amity, the daughter of Vertal Cuedallas and Bertie Lee Parrish Runyan. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a Masters degree from Columbia University in New York City, she was known as an authority in Indian education. She began her career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a teacher in Tuba City, AZ. She was appointed an education specialist and advisor for the instructional programs in the Bureau schools for Navajo students. In the mid-1950s, Miss Runyan's work in curriculum development and teaching methodology was a major influence in all of the education programs carried out by the Bureau. When she retired after 30 years of service with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, she remained involved with her specialty as a guest instructor at university workshops. After retirement, Miss Runyan moved to DeQueen, Arkansas and then Albuquerque from 1978 to 1995, prior to settling in Natchez to be with her family. Survivors include a sister, Frances R. Tumminello of Natchez; a brother, Cue Runyan Jr. of Cabot, AR; two sisters-in-law, Pauline Runyan of Shreveport, LA and Nancy Runyan of Kansas City, MO; and a number of nieces and nephews.
