Mervin D. Carman, 80, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2000. Carman was born April 19, 1920 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He grew up and graduated from high school in Martinsville, Indiana, where he played on the football and basketball teams. He entered the US Army at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, IN in 1942 and served as an air to ground, point to point radio transmitter/receiver operator. He was awarded the Asian-Pacific Service Medal for duties performed in Hawaii in 1943. Carmen met Charlotte Virginia Hobson after the close of WWII and they married on August 24, 1946 and raised their children. They moved to Albuquerque in 1985 after Carman retired from R.R. Donnelly and Sons Company, where he served primarily as a line up pressman for 40 years. Carman will be remembered by those close to him as a loving father, a quiet, gentle man with an enduring love for reading and an enthusiasm for spectator sports-in particular, college basketball and professional golf-and will be missed by friends in his bridge circles. He was also an avid fisherman. Carman was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Carman; and sisters, Catherine Carman and Madge Corbin. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Charlotte of Albuquerque; two children, Susan Spiegel and her husband, Bryan of Albuquerque, Neil Carman and his wife, Julie of Huntington Beach, CA; one sister, Betty Carrington of Crawfordsville, IN; five grandchildren, Michael Smith and wife, Elizabeth of Albuquerque, Angela McNatt and husband, Kevin of Bedford, TX, Michelle Smith of Bedford, TX, Shaun and Miranda Carman of Huntington Beach, CA; and one great-grandchild, Matthew Spiegel McNatt. A Memorial service for friends and family will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2000 at the Sombra Del Monte Christian Church, where Carman was a member for 15 years. Officiating will be The Rev. Daniel Kapornyai. The church is located one half block north of Menaul and four blocks west of Wyoming at 2528 Utah NE.
