Obituary for Matherly

James Howard Matherly and Flonnie Ellen Matherly. The children of James Howard Matherly and Flonnie Ellen Matherly are saddened to announce the deaths of their parents. Jim died on December 12, 1999, while in Farmington Hills, MI. Flonnie died on December 17, 1999, also while in Farmington Hills. Jim was born in Springfield, MO, on February 8, 1929, to Forrest and Elvina Matherly. After serving in the U.S. Army in Japan from 1947-1949, Jim joined LandAir Corporation in Alamogordo as an operations specialist. Flonnie Bullock was born in Mount Vernon, KY, on December 1, 1931, to Elisha Irvin and Dovie Bullock, and moved to Alamogordo in 1949 to join her brother. Jim and Flonnie married on March 23, 1950. Jim built a career spanning 40 years with LandAir (later renamed DynCorp), relocating to Albuquerque in 1974. He retired in 1994 as Vice-President for Administration, and was well-regarded by his colleagues. Flonnie earned a B.A. in Education and an M.A. in Special Education from the University of New Mexico. She worked for over 20 years as a special education teacher for the Albuquerque Public Schools system. She was recognized by her friends and coworkers as a caring and gifted teacher, and retired in 1994 as Head Teacher at Acoma Elementary. Jim and Flonnie are survived by their three children, James Alan Matherly of San Antonio, TX, Larry Howard Matherly of Farmington Hills, MI, and Cheryl Ann Matherly of Houston, TX; and by their beloved granddaughter, Julia Ellyn Matherly of Farmington Hills, MI. Flonnie was preceded in death by her brothers, Irvin Edwin, John William, Robert Samuel, Kennesaw Mountain, Charles Curtis, James, and Wendell Boyd; and by sisters, Anna Mae Black and Belva Viviana DeBorde. She is survived by her sisters, Mary Roberta Cromer, Rose Elizabeth Wilford, Ruth Ester Nichols, Sarah Anita Young, Wilma Arita Edling, and Francis Alene Dean; and by her brother, Elisha Hiatt Bullock. Jim and Flonnie are interred at the Clear Creek Cemetery in Springfield, MO. The family invites friends to a memorial service to honor Jim and Flonnie at St. John's United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 5, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Heart Association.
