Obituary for Brown

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday August 06, 2000

Emma Lehman Brown, born March 10, 1911, in Albuquerque, died Thursday, August 3, 2000 after a long illness. Her Swiss father came to Albuquerque in 1905 to work for the railroad and her mother came from Switzerland in 1910. Emma exhibited her no-nonsense approach to life early on when, since she was fluent in German and English, she attended Santa Fe Railroad Shop meetings with her foreman-father just in case he needed to have something translated. She was also present the day the salesman delivered the family's first automobile in 1922 in order to explain - if necessary - and instructions to him. She graduated from Albuquerque High in 1928 where, as an outstanding female athlete, she was affectionately known as"Red." Her organizational ability and"get the job done" mannerstood her in good stead as secretary at Jefferson Junior High School and as an officer of numerous square dance organizations and neighborhood associations. She was instrumental in organizing the Country Club Christmas Luminaria Tour for many years. In her prime she fly fished the Pecos area and often rode horseback to the high lakes. Later she eased off a bit and enjoyed her Winsor Creek cabin - where she often played a mean game of bridge in between doing yard work. She was a longtime member and tireless worker for St. Paul Lutheran Church. Her husband of 59 years, Caleb G. Brown; a brother, Fred Lehman; and a sister, Marie Eakes preceded her in death. She is survived by a son, James C. Brown and his wife, Elizabeth of Albuquerque; a basset hound, Molly; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service with the Rev. Larry A. Wright officiating will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 5, at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. In lieu of flowers, donations to Emmas memory may be made to the Wheels Museum, 215 Central Ave. NW 87102; St. Paul Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 25001, 87125; or to the charity of your choice. French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.
