Obituary for Cathey

Madison"M.J." James Cathey, 79, a resident of Albuquerque since 1949, entered into the presence of his Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, on August 15, 2000. His parents, Clarence and Grace Cathey; and his brother, Winston O. Cathey, preceded him in death. His wife of 59 years, Thelma L. Cathey; his children, Sharon L. Cathey and Larry M. Cathey of Albuquerque; his sister, Nowata Jean Billon and her husband, Stephen of Las Vegas, NV; his brothers, J. Lee Cathey and his wife, Naomi of Carlsbad, NM, James Cathey of San Bernardino, CA; his sister-in-law, Nora Cathey of Albuquerque; his brother-in-law, Hubert Hutches and his wife, Anita of Pasadena, CA; and nieces and nephews survive him. He was born on November 27, 1920 in Cheek, Oklahoma. He graduated from Zaneis High School in 1938. M.J. attended Business College in Oklahoma City during 1939-40. He then moved to Springfield, CO, where he did clerical work for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). While in Springfield, he married Thelma L. Hutches, on December 7, 1940. They moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1941, where M.J. worked for Lockheed Aircraft and he then joined the U.S. Navy. He trained in San Diego, where he served as company clerk. He was then assigned to the U.S. Naval Schools and Training Command, and served as a Petty Officer in the Printing Department. The Cathey's moved to Albuquerque in 1949 and in 1951, M.J. became the manager of Case Thompson Printing Co. Later he worked as the Vice-President of Aiken Letter Shop and then started the family owned and operated LMC Printing Co. M.J. was a charter member and past president of the Albuquerque Club of Printing House Craftsmen and was instrumental in forming the original groups of craftsmen. He also served as President of the Printing Industry of NM and of the Exchange Club of Albuquerque. He served on the Board of Directors of the YMCA, New Mexico Press Assoc., Tourist Committee of the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, the Literacy Center of Albuquerque, and he was active in many other civic organizations. M.J. retired in 1992, but he stayed active with horseback riding and enlightening others about NM history, ghost towns and railroads. A Memorial service will be held at Calvary Chapel Southeast, 1215 Hazeldine SE, on Saturday, August 19, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Christian Academy, 1404 Lead SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106.
