Obituary for Vandam

Florence Ann Vandam, 83, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away December 4, 2000, at her home. She is survived by her seven children, sons, Gerry and wife, Liz of Minneapolis, MN, Rick and wife, Denise of Reno, NV, David and wife, Gayanne of Austin, TX, Charles and wife, Joanie of Missoula, MT; daughters, Kileen and husband, Dale Scott, Winette and husband, Larry Garcia, Judy and husband, David Prada, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Jake Scott and wife, Judy of Las Vegas, NV, Kile and Whitney Hanold, Derek and Alex Prada, and Zak Garcia of Albuquerque, Patrick, Katy, and Nicholas of Minneapolis, MN, Dawn and Laren of Reno, NV, Dylan of Austin, TX, DeNae and Peter of Missoula, MT; and great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Avery; brothers, Robert O¯Callahan of Marysville, WA, and William O¯Callahan of San Mateo, CA; and sisters, Mary Schreiber of Hillside, IL, and Patricia Buckley and husband, Justice Robert Buckley of Arlington Heights, IL Florence was born in Chicago on December 24, 1916. She received her BA degree from Mundelein College in Chicago and her Masters degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. She was the first female librarian at De La Salle High School in Chicago, IL. She entered the Navy during WWII and served as Educational Services Officer at the Naval Hospital in Norman, OK. Upon her discharge, she had earned the rank of Lieutenant. She taught in Guam High School and the University of Hawaii. After returning to Albuquerque, she taught in the Albuquerque Public School system at Madison Jr. High and was the librarian at Valley and Albuquerque High. She was the librarian at Albuquerque Academy for 18 years where she retired in 1985. She was an active member of the Roadrunner Unit of Waves National where she served as president as well as being active in the Navy League and the NM Retired Teachers Association. Services will be held Thursday, December 7, 2000, 8:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. NE, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Wednesday, December 6, 2000, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
