Obituary for Landon

Arthur (Al) Landon, 91, passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2000 at the Veteran's Hospital in Albuquerque. A 15 year resident of Elephant Butte, he is survived by his wife of 28 years, Bobbi Landon; two sons, Alan and Randi of California; four daughters, Kay, Aleen, Mary Ann of Michigan and Sheila, Georgia and stepson David, New Mexico; several grand and great grandchildren. Al was born in South Dakota, entered the US Army in April '42. He saw action in North Africa, 2nd Armored Division under General George Patton. During an intense battle, his tank was hit by enemy fire, killing all occupants, except SSGT Landon, who sustained serious leg wounds. The Nazi's picked him up, surgically treated his shot up leg. As a prisoner of war, he was traded for a young German pilot. During an 18 month period, he underwent several surgeries at Walter Reed Hospital and was honorably discharged in May 1945. As an expediter for McDonald Douglas Aircraft, Al and his team were sent worldwide, whenever one of the company's aircraft went down; their job-to repair and/or retrieve the plane and return it to the factory. He accumulated 33 years as a professional driver for Greyhound, Continental Trailways and Navajo Freight Lines. A friend and fellow driver, Pat Rowland and Mr. Landon, went into the nursery business in the early 50's founding Row-land (later Rowland) Nursery in Albuquerque. Al and Bobbi made three fishing trips to Alaska, first in a mini-home and then a 5th Wheel Trailer, both build by Mr. Landon. He was also a self taught silversmith, creating several jewelry pieces for family and friends. A Memorial Service, with military honors, is to be held Sunday, December 10, 2000 at 2:00 p.m., at"The Church at the Butte", Elephant Butte. Creation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the"American Heart Association" or"Alzheimer's Association, New Mexico Chapter". He will be greatly missed. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the Albuquerque Veteran's Hospital nursing staff and especially to Virginia Compere, MD, for their compassion and loving care.
