Obituary for Franklin

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday October 15, 2000

Garry R. Franklin, beloved husband, father, teacher and friend, died on Wednesday, October 11, 2000. He was 50 years old. A long-time high school science teacher, Mr. Franklin was most proud of his achievements as Museum Educator for the Bradbury Science Museum at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. His work there introduced thousands of visitors, schoolchildren and dignitaries to the Laboratory's many science initiatives, rich history and current research. With an eccentric flair and commanding personality, Mr. Franklin became a local Los Alamos personality through his efforts as an advocate for science education. Born in eastern Kentucky in 1949, he received his Bachelor's of Science from the University of Kentucky in 1971. He also has a Master's of Science in Science Education from the University of Kentucky, received in 1978. Garry Franklin died peacefully, surrounded by the ones he loved after a long battle with leukemia. Cancer took his life, but it couldn't touch his spirit, dignity or humor. Garry is survived by his wife, Tanya of Albuquerque, NM; son, Chris Ainsworth of Cincinnati, OH; parents, James and Becky Franklin of Ashland, KY; and sisters, Susan Dearborn of Cynthiana, KY; Pamela Willeray of Lexington, KY; and Cynthia Marcum of Lawrenceburg, KY. Cremation has taken place and memorial services are being planned. A memorial scholarship fund is being set-up in his name. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted to the Garry Franklin Memorial Scholarship Fund. Arrangements by Aspen Funeral Alternatives, 1935 Juan Tabo NE.
