Gilbert F. Gallegos, 87, passed away surrounded by all his loved ones on Monday, January 21, 2002. Mr. Gallegos, who was known for gentleness and kindness, was born in Anton Chico, New Mexico on April 26, 1914. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Adina Gallegos; his brothers, Alejandro Gallegos, Julian Gallegos, Luis Gallegos; and his sister, Elena Rael. Also preceding Mr. Gallegos in death was his son, Jimmy P. Gallegos; and two grandchildren. He is survived by two sons and two daughters, Gilbert M. Gallegos and wife, Patty, Hope Chavez and husband, J.D., Danny J. Gallegos and wife, Connie, and Annabell Gallegos and Jack Weber, all of Albuquerque. He was greatly loved by his grandchildren, Faith Sanchez and Richie Esquibel, Daniel Gallegos Jr., Gabrielle Gallegos, Stephanie Duneman and husband, Donnie, Dominic Gallegos, and Bobbi Cisneros and husband, Richard. Mr. Gallegos had four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his ex-wife, Aggie Gallegos and husband, Jose Sandoval; one brother, Jose Carlos Rael of Tucson, Arizona; brother-in-law, Seferino Rael; and sister-in-law, Eloisa Gallegos of Colorado. Gilbert F. Gallegos was very proud of his military service. He was in World War II and fought with the Big Red One in seven campaigns. Congresswoman Heather Wilson honored Gilbert last May with a special medal commemorating his service in the Normandy Invasion on Omaha Beach. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal by General Omar Bradley and several spearhead medals for leading battles. Mr. Gallegos was a farmer and a horseman in his youth and later retired after driving a school bus in Anton Chico for the Santa Rosa Consolidated School System. In 1968, the Gallegos family moved to Albuquerque where Gilbert lived until his death. He was a devout Catholic and member of St. Joseph on the Rio Grande Parish. Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph on the Rio Grande Catholic Church, 5901 St. Joseph Dr. NW. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, January 24, 2002, at 10:00 a.m. also at the church with Father Lawrence Gallegos (nephew) Celebrant. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be, Daniel Gallegos, Dominic Gallegos, Seferino Rael, Jr., Barney Rael, Steve Gallegos and George Gallegos. French Mortuary Westside Chapel, 9300 Golf Course Rd. NW.
