Obituary for Walter

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday February 14, 2002

Cammie Lois Walter, age 92, a resident of Albuquerque and Bosque Farms for over 65 years, left this mortal existence to join her heavenly Father on February 5, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Neal O. Walter; and by her siblings, Elton Bazzill, Ellen Smith, and Catherine Milburn. Lois is survived by her two children, Charles Walter and wife, Janet of Springville, Utah, and Sonja Brown and husband, Emmit of Albuquerque; her six grandchildren, Neal Austin Brown, Christopher Walter, Stephen Walter and wife, Sheena, Peter Walter and wife, Jennifer, Benjamin Walter and wife, Maryanne, and Tom Walter; four beautiful great-grandchildren, Andria, Alex, Aspen and Sean. Cammie Lois was born December 19, 1909 to Cameron and Mary Alice Bazzill in Avila, Missouri, the youngest of four children. Her father, a teacher, saw opportunities in the new state of New Mexico and as Lois was growing up, took his family to several New Mexico towns, including Buchanan, San Jon, Las Cruces and Las Vegas. She graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1926, then worked as a secretary, bookkeeper, and County Recorder in Las Cruces, where she was reunited with her high school classmate, Neal. Lois and Neal were married in Alamogordo, NM on November 24, 1932. During the Great Depression, the young couple were fortunate to maintain good jobs and did much to support their extended families. She and Neal moved to Albuquerque in 1938 where she was employed as a secretary for Berger and Briggs Real Estate and Insurance Co., while he worked as service manager for Oden Motor Co. In 1939, they focused their talents and resources on starting an auto repair business in Albuquerque. For the next 20 years, they successfully operated Walter's Automotive Service. It was Lois' proficiency in planning and organizing details that crystallized their good ideas, hard work, and solid values into success. After they closed the business, she was employed as bookkeeper for Rust Tractor Co. and Gibson Discount until she retired in 1978. Although small in stature, her energy and vitality seemed unbounded and she was always ready to meet new challenges. Throughout her life she constantly drew guidance, strength and support from her deep abiding faith and love of the Lord. Lois saw service as a joyful expression of that love. While she served in many capacities in various congregations, she was especially happy when her service centered around sacred music. She was a talented pianist and organist, and used this talent for the Lord as long as she was able. She was pianist/organist and music director for Westminister Presbyterian, Harwood Methodist, and Hope Presbyterian Churches. Her great love and charity were felt by all who knew her, but especially blessed, were her late husband, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces. She also held very special places in her heart for her caring neighbors and dear friends in Christ. The family wishes to thank Lois' many loving friends for their earnest prayers and caring support. A special thanks to the staff of Laurelview Healthcare, Rita, Mark and Pauline, for their thoughtful and attentive care of this perfect little lady during her last days. A Memorial Service for Cammie Lois will be held Saturday, February 16, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the First Baptist Church of Bosque Farms, 1350 Bosque Farms Blvd., Bosque Farms, NM, with Pastor Mike Engle officiating. The family requests that memorial floral expressions and/or donations to the Baptist Missionary Program be made to the First Baptist Church of Bosque Farms.
