Obituary for Pickering

E. Elizabeth "Betty" (Head, Mitchell) Pickering, a resident of Albuquerque for 35 years, died March 4, 2002 at La Vida Llena Health Care Center. She was born October 19, 1910 in Johnstown, PA. to Cora Leffler and Joseph Head, the fourth of five children. Betty was predeceased by husbands, W. Bennett Mitchell and Raleigh L. Pickering. She is survived by three daughters, Anne Horne and husband, Walter, Elaine Reitzel and husband, David, Susan Smith and husband, H. F. Smith; six grandchildren, Douglas, Devan, and Dennis Horne, Tamara Hetzer, Robin Plopper, and Tom Ruhe; and eight great-grandchildren. Betty was an interior decorator for Mossman Gladden and Leishman Interiors until her retirement in 1977. She was an active member of St. Paul's Methodist Church and the Beauceant Lodge Chapter of the Shrine, Daughters of the Nile and Honored Ladies of the Shrine. Betty was an avid gardener and was very active in the Flower Association for many years. Betty was fondly known as the cookie lady making life"sweet" for all her friends. She brought smiles and beauty to everyone she encountered. She will be sorely missed. Cremation arrangements are by Sunrise Society of New Mexico. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, April 14, 2002, 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 9500 Constitution Ave., NE, Albuquerque, NM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Betty's name to the Perpetual Fund, Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple, 6600 Zuni SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108.
