Obituary for Chavez

Bonifacio A. Chavez born January 14, 1913 in San Ignacio, NM 20 miles west of Santa Rosa, NM died after a short illness on March 15, 2002. He taught school for five years, and worked for Moise Bros., a general merchandise store. He was inducted into the Armed Forces in March 1941, where he served until his discharge in October 1945. Some of this service was in the European Theatre. He was awarded the American Defense Medal, EAME Campaign, two Bronze Stars, an overseas stripe, an overseas bar and a Purple Heart for wounds he received. His rank upon discharge was that of Army Sergeant. In August 1947, after taking a Civil Service test, he went to work for the Santa Rosa U.S. Postal Service and worked there until his retirement in June 1973. After his retirement, he worked with the First National Bank of Santa Rosa and the N.M. Employment Commission. His parents were Severo and Genoveva Chavez, now deceased. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ernestine; five children, Priscilla of Bernalillo, NM, Veronica of Albuquerque, David of Houston, TX, Carla of Rio Rancho, NM and Francisco of Albuquerque; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; three brothers; and two sisters. Services will be held Thursday, March 21, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Santa Rosa, NM.
