Obituary for Carroll

Billy Joseph Carroll died after a short illness on March 30, 2002. He was born on May 28, 1930 in Ft. Worth, TX. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Margaret Mock Carroll; a sister, Bobbie Ann Ferrell of Irving, TX; three nephews, David Ferrell of Atlanta, GA, Martin Mock of Rapid City, SD, and Keith Mock of Detroit, MI; one niece, Teresa Ferrell of Irving, TX. Bill was a resident of Albuquerque since 1975, and had served as the Manager of Heath and Safety at the University of New Mexico for many years, retiring from there in 1993. He was a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and was honored as the state, regional and National Safety Professional of the Year for his accomplishments in the field of safety engineering. One article he authored was the most requested reprint in the history of the Safety Engineering Journal. He was a Certified Safety Professional (CSP). He served his country in the US Air Force as an electronic flight systems specialist trainer. Bill authored many articles and delivered many speeches and lectures on various subjects of safety engineering all over the US, Canada, The UK, Australia, and China. Bill held degrees in Electrical/ Electronic Engineering from Tristate University, Angola, IN and from Delgado College in New Orleans, and Central Missouri State University in Safety Engineering. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. Throughout his career in safety, he nurtured and mentored many young professionals, helping many achieve the rank of CSP by organizing and teaching exam refresher courses. Before his career in safety engineering he was a broadcast engineer at several radio and television stations and was an on air personality playing many kinds of music from Top 40 to big band, country, blues, and jazz. Music was an important part of his life and he enjoyed many types. He appeared on stage both as a musician and actor in Community Theater and on TV as on-air musical talent and on Public Service Announcements and commercials. Bill was an avid, expert skier, enjoyed bicycling, boating, hiking, and camping. He was generous in nature, giving freely of his time and talent to many; he felt a commitment to contribute to the community in which he lived, and was active in his neighborhood, as elections worker and performed pro bono safety engineering work. His interests were broad; he was an incredibly intelligent, gifted individual who could do and fix anything from electronics and computers to road graders. His rich life was shared by many dear friends and colleagues. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the New Mexico Animal Humane Association, 615 Virginia SE, 87108.
