Juanita M. Lowery, 91, passed away Monday, April 1, 2002. She was born April 16, 1910 in Springfield, MO to Cora Belle Cottner Moley and James B. Motley. Juanita married Garland Reed and moved to Albuquerque in 1939. She later married William Lowery. Mrs. Lowery raised four children: Marian Clayton, Robert Reed, Shirley Harty and Jacquelyn Buckhanan; adopted children; Myrtle Jean Herndon and Robert Harty; grandchildren, Jan Solomon and husband, Alex, Michael Clayton and wife, Jeri, Roderick Clayton and wife, Audrey, Marsha Silva and husband, John, Mark Harty and wife, Diane, David Harty, Steven Buckhanan and wife, Veda, Shawn Buckhanan and wife, Rosalind, and Sandie Lucero; great-grandchildren, Alex Jr., Kent Solomon, Michael and Cameron Clayton, Shawnda and Sandy Silva, Krystal, Kimberly, William Clayton, Adria and Julia Harty; great-great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Trae, Kennedy, Kianna, Honoree Solomon, Lian, Steven, Schellie, Simone, Stanton, Shawn and Solomon Buckhanan; and a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.G. Lowery. Mrs. Lowery was a member for over 60 years at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She served in many capacities: Sunday school teacher, pianist and director of choir and Young Matron organization, originator of the youth choir, and directed plays and pageants. Mrs. Lowery was Pastored by Stephen Billingslea. She most recently served as secretary of her Missionary Society. Mrs. Lowery was a member and past president of Winona Art and Study Club, National Council of Negro Women, NAACP, Mt. Olive District Association, a former member of the League of Women Voters and the New Mexico Association of Colored Women's Clubs, Inc. She received many citations for her church work and service to the community. Services will be held Friday, 2:00 p.m., at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 2401 University Blvd. SE, with Rev. Michael Clayton and Rev. Shawn Buckhanan officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Michael Clayton, Mark Harty, David Harty, Steven Buckhanan, Shawn Buckhanan, Rod Clayton and Alex Solomon. Honorary pallbearers will be The Deacons of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Viewing will be held at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 2401 University Blvd. SE, Thursday, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Arrangements by French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.
