Obituary for Dickens

Wanda Wayne Dickens, age 64, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, passed away April 7, 2002. she was a beloved mother, sister, daughter and friend. She is survived by her son, Jeffrey Dickens of Arlington, TX; sister, Patricia Kirkes and husband, Glen of Hobbs, NM; and many other relatives and countless friends. Her mother, Ara P. Russell; her father, Robert M. Russell; and her former husband, Jerome S. Dickens preceded her in death. Mrs. Dickens was born and raised in Hobbs and graduated from Hobbs High School in 1956. She was editor of the school newspaper for three years. She then attended Western New Mexico University, majoring in journalism. Wanda moved to Albuquerque and worked for Mountain Bell/US West as a manager for 35 years until her retirement. Mrs. Dickens received the prestigious President's Club Award on several occasions and was especially proud of the work she did with the Community Relations Team. She treasured the lifelong friendships she made during her years with the company. Wanda joined the Luminaria Chapter of the American Business Women's Association in 1967 where she served as President in 1980-1981 and received Woman of the Year honors in 1985. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Telephone Retirees Association of New Mexico. She joined the Monte Vista Christian Church in 1962 and stayed an active member. Mrs. Dickens held the Worship Ministry Chair and was a newly appointed elder in the church. Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday, April 13, 2002 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Monte Vista Christian Church, 3501 Campus Blvd. NE with the Rev. Fred W. Dorisse and the Rev. Michelle Tatlock officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Wanda's name to either the Animal Humane Society of NM, 614 Virginia SE, 87108, Monte Vista Christian Church, 3501 Campus Blvd. NE, 87106, or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2021 Girard Blvd. SE, Suite 201, 87106.
