Obituary for Hand

Lieutenant Colonel Robert Hand, U.S. Army (Ret.), 80, a resident of Albuquerque for two years, passed away in his sleep at the home of his son and daughter-in-law on Monday, April 15, 2002. Born in Yakima, WA, October 22, 1921 to Samuel and Ethel Hand, he joined the military at age 15. During his distinguished military career he served in Italy during World War II and later in Korea,Thailand, and for NATO Forces in Naples and at the Pentagon. Among his many military decorations are the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and the Croix de Guerre. After his retirement from the military in 1966, he moved to Pagosa Springs, CO, where he opened the Thunderbird Hunting Lodge, which he operated for thirteen years. He was a beloved member of the Pagosa Springs community as is evidenced by the community decision to name the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center in his honor. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Hand; two sons, Robert and Scott Hand; daughter, Donna Mollica; as well as two stepsons, Thierry and Benjamin Morpurgo; and numerous grandchildren and step-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held. The family requests that any donations be sent to the Pagosa Springs Chamber of Commerce, Pagosa Springs, CO, 81147.
