Obituary for Akin

V. Margaret Booth Akin, 87, a resident of Albuquerque since 1918, died at home of natural causes on Saturday, May 11, 2002. She was the daughter of Carl Booth and Bessie Shaver Booth. Ms. Akin attended the old Armijo School on Isleta Blvd. and graduated with the Albuquerque High School class of 32. She shared her love of dance with her students at the Akin School of Dance in Santa Fe and Albuquerque during the early 50's, as well as leading the award-winning dance troupe of the Ballut Abyud Shrines Order of the White Star. She also served as Grand Worthy Matron for the Albuquerque Chapter of the Daughters of the Nile. In 1954, Ms. Akin completed her nurse's training at St. Joseph Hospital's Regina School of Nursing. Passionately dedicated to nursing, she worked at St. Joseph's Hospitals in both Albuquerque and in Wichita, Kansas, where her work led her to meet and adopt one of her patients, a developmentally disabled newborn, and to become a life-long champion for the disabled. Ms. Akin is survived by a son, Ron Akin; a daughter, Laurie Ann Akin; sisters, Elva Louise Whitney, Jean Carol Trosper, and Laura Mae Dorn; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and countless friends who will remember and miss our family historian and story-teller for her qualities of compassion, charm, humor, gracious warmth to all, and for her indomitable strength of spiritbordering on sheer stubbornnessthat have inspired all who have known and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Bessie; her brothers, Carl, Jr. and Dan; and a sister, Bessie Hopkins. Services will be held Thursday, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE.
