Obituary for Whalen

Dr. Richard E. Whalen, Jr., 80, a resident of Albuquerque, born on December 4, 1921, died Thursday, May 30, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Magdalen Whalen of Albuquerque; son, Timothy H. Whalen of Albuquerque; daughter, Madalyn Sheldon of Silver Spring, MD; son, Richard E. Whalen, III of Silver Spring, MD; sisters, Patricia Konya and Mickey R. Cattaneo, both of Belleville, IL; and four grandchildren, Kevin and Ryan Whalen of Albuquerque; Kathrine Sheldon and Devin Whalen, both of Silver Spring, MD. Born in Carbondale, IL, Richard earned the Bronze Star during WWII while serving as head scout for the 289th Infantry Division. He later went on to earn his Bachelor's degree at Southern Illinois University, and his Master's at the University of Mississippi, and a Doctorate at Indiana University. After serving as a professor at Bradley University, Richard Whalen was appointed first president of Black Hawk College in Moline, IL. He later served as Dean of Students at Dickinson State (ND) and Highlands Universities (NM). Services will be held Tuesday, June 4, 2002, 9:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. Interment will follow at 12:00 noon, at Santa Fe National Cemetery. .DMP
