Obituary for Chamis

Calliope (Callie), a resident of Belen, died quietly on Saturday, June 1, 2002 due to complications from diabetes. She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Stars and VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Callie was born in Santa Fe on April 12, 1934, moving to Las Vegas, NM when she was quite young. She attended college in Denver, Co., however, she received her degree in education from Highlands University in Las Vegas. She was a resident of Belen of almost 40 years, retiring from the Belen Consolidated school system after 33 years, where she was a PE Teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, and Director of Transportation. Preceding her in death were her father, Gust Chamis in 1993; her mother, Mamie in 1994; and her brother, John in 1986. Callie is survived by her sister, Penny also of Belen; her brother, Chris of Long Island, NY; her aunt, Mrs. C. S. Kissel of Canton, GA; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Sara Chamis of Espanola, NM; her nephew, Michael of Laurel, MD; and her extra special and close friends, Sabie and Bing Romero also of Belen. She is also survived by her many loving cousins and also leaves many close and dear friends. All services will take place at the Romero Funeral Home Chapel with a viewing held on Monday, June 3 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will take place on Tuesday, June 4 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Terrace Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jim Burk; Jim Danner; Ken Hainsworth; Greg and Geoff Krause; Al Padilla; John and Mac Sanchez. The family requests that contributions be made to the Sandia Hospice Pavilion at St. Josephs Hospital; 601 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd; NE; Albuquerque, NM 87102.
