Obituary for Maxwell

Mary"Elsie" Maxwell passed away at her residence on Monday, July 22, 2002. Mrs. Maxwell was born to Flavio A. Chacon and Lucinda Martinez Chacon in La Lama, NM on October 25, 1934. Elsie is survived by one son, Arnold L. Maxwell and wife, Karen of Albuquerque; three daughters, Veronica Fastnacht and husband, Paul of Albuquerque, Maxine Maxwell and Jim Beyer of Albuquerque, Ann Maxwell and Zeke Chavez of Rio Rancho, NM; three brothers, Tom Chacon and wife, Lucille of Littleton, CO, Ray Chacon of Denver, CO, Clifford Chacon and wife, Jean of Albuquerque; and one sister, Linda O'Donnell and husband, Fred of Trinidad, CO; eight grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold L. Maxwell; and one son, Dean Maxwell. From 1964 to 1968, Elsie volunteered at Mesa View Elementary as"Room Mother" for her children's classes and as a helper in the school's cafeteria. From 1968-1974, she volunteered at Casa San Jose with Margaret Gutierrez, helping the unwed mothers with their newborns. It was through that program that Charlie Begay, one of the program's children came to live with the Maxwell's as a foster child for about a year. Then from 1974-1977, she directed the"Guitar Choir" at St. Teresa Church which was 21 members strong and included her four oldest children. In February, 1976, she became the President of the First Legion of Mary at St. Teresa under the direction of Fr. Valentine Young, O.F.M. in 1977, she volunteered at the Grants Health Department and worked under the direction of local nurse, Margaret Bonomo. In 1983, she worked at Grants Health Store. This was where she really increased her interest and knowledge in herbs and their healing properties. On August 15, 1988, she became a Eucharistic Minister under Father Howard's direction and took communion to the sick. Elsie taught CCD, Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, for many years both at home and at St. Teresa School. In 1979, she worked at Kriegler's Deli for about a year as a cook with her daughters, Maxine and Ann and her sister, Linda. From 1992-1999, she was a volunteer and substitute teacher at St. Teresa School where her granddaughters, Vanessa and Sandra attended. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 26, 2002 at Grants Mortuary Chapel. A Rosary will be recited on Friday, July 26, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church with Father Emeric Nordmeyer, O.F.M. officiating. Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, July 27, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Grants Memorial Park. Pallbearers include Cpl. Vanessa Maxwell, Sterling Davidson, Fred O'Donnell, Zeke Chavez, Jim Beyer, Ronald Maxwell. Honorary Pallbearers include Sandra Maxwell, Alexandria Maxwell, Mariah Maxwell, Matthew Maxwell, Kristopher Maxwell, Marcus Maxwell, Shannon Shiveley, Dominic Casados, Krystalee Casados, Brian Maxwell, Paul Cordova, Troy Chacon, Paul Fastnacht and Joe Silva. In lieu of flowers, Elsie had requested that donations be made to St. Teresa Catholic School, PO Box 668 Grants, NM 87020.
