Obituary for Carrington

Dr. Elsie R. Carrington, 90, Professor Emeritus of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, died August 8, 2002 at the Health Center at La Vida Llena. Dr. Carrington was a well-known teacher, physician, medical researcher, and author in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology. In 1977, she joined the faculty at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine as an Adjunct Professor. From 1977 until 1982, she directed the School of Medicine's interdisciplinary Maternal and Infant Care Program. In 1982, UNM named her Professor Emeritus. Dr. Carrington began her teaching career in 1949 at Temple University School of Medicine, after several years of private practice in Clinton, Iowa. In 1961, she joined the staff at the Medical College of Pennsylvania (formerly the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania) in Philadelphia as Research Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She was named Chairman of MCP's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1967 and held that position until 1977. During her years in Philadelphia, she was also a consultant and attending physician at the Veterans Administration Hospital, St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, and Philadelphia General Hospital. She received the Christian R. and Mary S. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1968. She was honored with the Four Freedoms Award for Distinguished Teaching. In 1972, she was awarded a Certificate of Honor by the Temple University Alumni Association. Dr. Carrington wrote extensively in medical journals, including the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Journal of Pediatrics, and Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, with particular emphasis on issues relating to her research concerning diabetes in pregnancy. With the late Dr. J. Robert Willson, she was co-editor and contributor to Obstetrics and Gynecology, a medical textbook, until 1991 when its 9th edition was published. Active in national and international medical affairs, Dr. Carrington served as 2nd vice president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists from 1969 until 1971. She was Chairman and a member of many committees related to fetal and perinatal medicine in that organization. She served as an Examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was a member of the American Medical Society, the American Association of Obstetricians, the American Fertility Society, the International Fertility Society, the International Society for Research in Biology of Reproduction, and the Society for the Study of Reproduction. Dr. Carrington was consultant to the Pathophysiology Committee of the National Commission on Diabetes; Advisory Consultant to the Food and Drug Administration; a member of the Medical Education Review Committee in the Department of Health, Education and Welfare; and a member of several committees of the March of Dimes National Foundation. She was past President of the Obstetrical Society of Philadelphia, one of only four women doctors elected to that office since the Society's founding in 1868. She was a consultant to the Written Examination Panel of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and National Board Medical Examiners and was a member of the Pennsylvania State Medical Society, Philadelphia Medical Society, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Endocrine Society, and the Philadelphia Neonatal Society. She was also an Honorary Fellow of the Miami Obstetric and Gynecologic Society and the Nassau Obstetric and Gynecologic Society. Dr. Carrington was a 1933 graduate of Wheaton College (Ill.), and a 1941 graduate of Temple University School of Medicine. She interned at Temple University Hospital. In 1949, she received an M.S. in Obstetrics and Gynecology from Temple University and was awarded a D.S.M. in 1981 from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr. Carrington was the wife of the late William J. Carrington, M.D. She was born in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late David N. Reid and Elizabeth (Bellingham) Reid. She was raised in Ventnor, New Jersey. She was an avid outdoorswoman, particularly fond of camping, hiking, and birding. She enjoyed swimming and deep sea fishing. She traveled for pleasure extensively though the U.S. and Europe and, in 1991, she participated in an Elder Hostel program in Costa Rica. Her survivors include her long-time friend and companion, Dr. Fae M. Adams of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Martha R. Gooden of Las Cruces, N.M.; a niece, Mary E. Gooden of Providence, R.I.; a niece and her husband, Jeanne G. and Ross M. Burkhardt of Las Cruces, N.M.; and a nephew, Robert N. Reid of Alexandria, Va. She was the sister of the late John M. Reid of Huntingdon Valley, Pa. The funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial contributions to a charity of their choice.
