Obituary for White

Sam Paul White, 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 15, 2002. Sam Paul was the last child of seven born to Laura (Jenkins) White and William Franklin White on February 9, 1909 on the White ranch at Sabinal, Texas. He later lived in Alpine, Texas and while there, worked for Kasner Motors, rebuilding engines for Army surplus vehicles. He attended Sul Ross State University where he took courses in mechanical engineering and also enjoyed playing tennis and played in State playoffs. Sul Ross is also where he was introduced to his future wife, Elizabeth, a native of New Mexico. On the 27th of August 1931 Sam and Elizabeth married at her family home in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Sam Paul and"Betty" moved to Port Arthur, Texas during the Spindletop Oil boom days and lived there for 31 years where Sam Paul owned and managed White Gas Co. While in Port Arthur, he became a charter member of the Port Arthur Lions Club (1957) and a Mason of the Masonic Lodge of Texas for 64 years. They retired to New Mexico. Sam Paul and Elizabeth celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in 1995. He enjoyed the outdoors, a good game of tennis, serving his community and helping family and friends. He was a proud Texan and always loved the Big Bend country where he grew up. He will be remembered lovingly by his daughters, Kathy Owen and husband, Bill of Albuquerque and Carole Metnick and husband, Larry of Highland Park, IL; grandchildren, Clarissa and Sam Owen, Jason Metnick, Tracy Metnick and Kimberly Metnick-Lenhart and husband, Liam; great-granddaughter, Megan Elizabeth Lenhart; sister-in-law, Marjorie Grimes; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth White in 1996. He was a man who felt blessed to have lived an abundant life, surrounded by so many who cared about and loved him. A private family committal service was held on Friday, at Sunset Memorial Park. Public memorial services are pending and will be announced at a later date.
