Obituary for Durning

Mabel Downer Bennet Durning, 87, a resident of Albuquerque, died Friday, August 23, 2002. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Bennet Calvert; and husband, Carl A.; sister, Trudy Downer Hardin and husband, Col. Paul; grandchildren, Sean Calvert and wife, Fran of Albuquerque and Heather Calvert and husband, Chris Bundy of Seattle, WA; great-grandchildren, Grace, Conner and Julian and other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her second husband, Charles H. Durning and her brothers, Spelman Downer and Marvin Downer.Mrs. Durning was born in 1915 in Roswell, NM and moved to Albuquerque in 1917.She moved to Longmont, CO in the 1950's and returned to Albuquerque in 2001 and resided in Montebello. Mrs. Durning graduated from Albuquerque High School and received her Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and her Master's in Guidance & Counseling from the University of New Mexico. She also lettered in sports at UNM. Mrs. Durning taught Physical Education at Albuquerque High School and opened the department when Highland High School began. She taught first grade in Los Lunas while attending UNM. Mrs. Durning was married to L.C. Bill Bennet Jr. before he was killed in 1944 during WWII and for whom the Carlisle Bennet American Legion Post was named. Her father, George S. Downer, was an attorney and partner with Keleher/ Downer Law Firm. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in Longmont, CO.
