Obituary for Mowery

Betty L. Mowery, 77, a long time resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully at her loving shelter care home, Marler Manor, in Albuquerque, September 17. She is survived by three children and their families, her daughter, Joyce Whisenant, and husband, John, of Albuquerque, and their children, Dr. Stan Whisenant of Plano, Texas, Major Daniel Whisenant of Redondo Beach, California, and his daughter, Ashleigh Kittle, Johnette Whisenant of Dallas, Texas, and her sons, Chris and Craig Taylor, Justin Whisenant of St. George's Medical School, Grenada, West Indies; and Jordyn Whisenant, UNM freshman student; her son, Mark Mowery, and his wife, Clay, and their daughter, Lara, and son Will, all of Santa Fe, and her son, Mike Mowery, and his wife, Pam, and their daughter, Darcie, and son, Dylan, all of Mountainview, Arkansas. Betty's family and friends cherish the memories of her independent spirit, her generous nature, her courageous outlook, and her devotion to family and friends. She proudly worked as an executive secretary for both the University of New Mexico to whom she donated her body for research at UNM Medical School and later for Sandia National Laboratories where she retired in 1993. Her passions included her singing in her church choir at First United Methodist Church; watching her grandchildren's sports events and other activities; taking friends to eat enchiladas at Padilla's Restaurant; cross country skiing in Chama where she was the Senior Women's Champion in 1990-92; playing racquetball in the senior women's division; and most recently, challenging her friends at Marler Manor to a good game of Scrabble or Rummy Cube. A special Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 21, 2002 at First United Methodist Church, 314 Lead SW at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to either the First United Methodist Church Choir, 314 Lead SW, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87106 or the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA), New Mexico Chapter, 10817 Griffith Park Drive SE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87123.
