Obituary for Salars

Oscar G."Top" Salars, 89, of Silver City passed away in Memorial Medical Center, Friday, September 27, 2002. Graveside services with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post 18 and VFW Post 3347 will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at Ft. Bayard National Cemetery. Mr. Salars was born August 5, 1913 in Silver City, NM. He was the son of William Edward Salars and Sarah Ellen Roberts Salars. He was married to Lucy Lee Anderson who preceded him in death September 21, 2000. He is survived by one daughter, Kathryn Lynnette Gadberry and her husband, Freddy of Silver City; three granddaughters, Chris Jackson and her husband, Bobby, Kathy Bullington and her husband, Curtis"Buzz" and Carrie Brown and her husband, Eric all of Silver City; six great-grandchildren, Keith Wade Bullington, Erika Page Bullington, Stevi Brown, Jade Brown, Brandon Brown and Damon Narvaez; two brothers, Calvin Salars and his wife, Barbara and Joe Roy Salars and his wife, Susie. Mr. Salars was employed by the Grant County Road Department and the U.S. Forest Service. He was a member of the CCC and the Army National Guard. His enlisted time with the National Guard started in 1929 with Troop F, 111th Brigade horse calvary and ended in 1989. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He returned to Silver city and helped start the Army National Guard in 1947 with Battery B716th Gun Battalion. He worked as the maintenance technician and First Sergeant with Battery B until 1961 when he moved to Deming, NM as the supervisor of the Organizational Sergeant Major of the 2nd Gun Battalion and in 1967 he was promoted to the rank of Command Sergeant Major for the State of New Mexico and was the first Command Sergeant Major in the nation for the Army National Guard. He retired August 4, 1978 from the Army National Guard. Mrs. Salars enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, but most of all he enjoyed playing golf and played almost everyday, rain or shine. Family and friends will miss him.
