Obituary for Wingfield

Jack Isaac Wingfield, 72, died in the hospice unit of Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital Oct. 12, after a four-month battle with lung cancer. He was born October 17, 1929, in Littlefield, Texas, the youngest of 10 children of James Isaac Wingfield and Tempie Barton Hinds Wingfield. He was raised in Fort Sumner, Jal, Mountain Air, Santa Rosa, Carlsbad and Roswell, N.M.; Littlefield and Morton, Texas. In September 1946, he entered the U.S. Army at the age of 16, where he served as a diesel mechanic in Okinawa. He later worked in his father's jewelry store as a watch repairman, a trade he studied for at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. While there, he met and married Charlotte Wileman of Randlett, Okla., in 1952. He began pipeline work with Texaco in Archer City, Texas, in 1953, later working for that company and Kerr-McGee Corp. in Seminole, Drumwright, Cushing and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1979, he and his family moved to Albuquerque, where he was a salesman for Plateau Supply and Wisco Supply. He retired in 1994 and began part-time work at The Championship Golf Course at the University of New Mexico. He loved the game of golf and the UNM course dearly, sometimes working all morning and then playing 36 holes of golf in the afternoon. He was a devout Christian and member of Del Norte Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Charlotte; one son, Mark Wingfield of Dallas and his wife, Alison; two grandchildren, Luke and Garrett Wingfield; two sisters, Martha Wright of Carlsbad and Margaret Hutchins of El Granada, Calif.; and one brother, Vance Wingfield of West Monroe, Louisiana. A memorial service is scheduled at Del Norte Baptist Church, 5800 Montgomery Blvd., for 4 p.m. Oct. 15. Private burial will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Memorials may be designated to a tree beautification project in Jack's honor at UNM's Championship Golf Course, in care of UNM Memorial Gifts, 2 Woodward Center, 700 Lomas NE, Suite 108, Albuquerque, NM 87131, Ref.
