Obituary for Johnson

Carl Edmond Johnson, 84, formerly of Amarillo, Pampa, and Panhandle, Texas, died Wednesday, October 9, 2002 in Albuquerque. Mr. Johnson was born September 8, 1918, in Wapanucka, Oklahoma. Mr. Johnson and his twin, the late Ruth White of Pampa, were the youngest of 11 children born to Daniel Jackson and Mary Elizabeth"Mollie" (McClain) Johnson. His family farmed near Wellington, Texas. In 1941, Carl enlisted in the US Army. He married Emma Jane Westmoreland of El Paso in 1943 at St. Clement's Episcopal Church. During his tour of duty with the 16th Quartermaster Squadron, First Cavalry Division, Staff Sgt./Mess Sgt. Johnson became known for his cream filled pies, often bartering baked goods with the natives from local islands in the South Pacific for eggs and dairy products for the troops. He served in Leyte, New Guinea, Luzon, Southern Philippines, Bismarck, Archipelago. He received the American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal, but his true reward was in the knowledge that he had fed his troops well and in the praise from his men and his commanding officers. In 1945, Mr. Johnson returned to Pampa. As part owner of the Barnett and Johnson Construction Company, Mr. Johnson built homes as well as the Parish Hall of his church. After 25 years as owner of Carl Johnson Cafe in Panhandle, Texas, he and his wife retired and moved to Amarillo. He moved to Albuquerque in 1995. Carl said he had no regrets, had been everywhere he wanted to go, done everything he needed to do, and loved his family and friends. His wife of 48 years preceded him in death in 1991. Carl was also preceded in death by all ten of his siblings. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Molly and Stan Hearron of Albuquerque; his son, Kimball Carter Johnson of Laguna Beach, California; three granddaughters, Angela Hearron and Laura Hearron of Albuquerque, and Jane Cook and husband, Greg of Folsom, California; and one great-grandson, Jack Cook, also of Folsom, California. A Remembrance Celebration will be held in Albuquerque at the Hearron home this Sunday afternoon, October 13, 2002. Memorial Services are set for Saturday, October 19, 2002 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Pampa. Cremains will be placed next to those of his wife in the church columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made for the Memorial Fund or Day School Fund of St. Matthew's Church, 727 W. Browning Avenue, Pampa, Texas 79065; or a charity of choice.
