Obituary for Shaw

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday November 12, 2002

Harold N. Shaw, 69, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Saturday, November 9, 2002 at the V.A. Hospital in Albuquerque after complications following heart surgery. It was an obstacle that even he could not overcome. He was born in South Bend, IN on January 7, 1933 and grew up with six brothers and sisters. He is survived by his three sisters, Helen Tiege of South Bend, IN, Pat Green of Mishawaka, IN, and Donna Martin of South Bend, IN. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wally, and sisters, Ethel Robinson and Barbara Smith. Harold joined the Army in 1952 and made it his first career. He served tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam before retiring in 1972 to Albuquerque. He then joined the UNM police force where he worked until transferring to the UNM physical plant and the job of special events coordinator. The sound of his whistle and infectiously positive attitude made the University a better place to be. He retired in 1992 to give himself time to devote to traveling and being with family. Harold's greatest success and central focus of his life was always his family. Harold was devoted to his wife, Rosemary, daughter, Jeanne, sons, Butch, Mike, and Donny, daughter-in-law, Peggy, and grandson, Adam. The incredible loss of his presence is balanced only by the lasting example that set with his amazing energy and the commitment he brought to his job as husband, father, protector, and friend. Harold's strength, sense of humor, and enthusiasm for life made a lasting impact on everyone who met him. He had a gift for making everyone that he met feel special. He lived his life with a strong sense of duty and respect for the people that served this country. He visited the Veteran's cemetery every Veteran's Day to honor the memory of those soldiers and friends that had passed before him. The world is a better place because of his examples of love and integrity. It is diminished by his absence. Services will be held Wednesday, November 13,2002, 11:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. Interment will take place at 2:00 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Dave Larison, Mike DeLuca, Jeff Rein, Adam Triolo, Don Mackel, and Jack Winn. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Assoc., NM Affiliate, P.O. Box 90790, 87199-0790. Arrangements by French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE.
