Obituary for Dudley

Virginia Baird Dudley, 77, died Tuesday, November 12, 2002 after a long illness. She was predeceased by her parents, Florence Baird Decker and Alan Glazebrook Decker. Virginia attended Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia, from which she graduated in 1945 with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology. She worked as a social worker in Roanoke, Virginia, until she met her future husband, Dr. J. Nicholas ¯Nick¯ Dudley, the health commissioner of Roanoke. On November 20, 1948, Virginia and Nick were married and continued to live in Roanoke until moving to Albuquerque in 1953. Virginia was active in the Ladies¯ Volunteer Auxiliary at Lovelace Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital, and Anna Kaseman Hospital, and she was a member of the Lovelace Wives¯ organization. She was an avid bridge player and a charter member of the ¯born to shop¯ brigade, who took special delight in finding the perfect gift. Virginia and Nick were active in three Albuquerque churches: Immanuel Presbyterian, First Presbyterian, and Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church. As a deacon for First Presbyterian Church, Virginia participated in various outreach activities. She was a busy mother, who was very involved in the lives and activities of her children. Virginia cherished time with her family, most recently participating in a family reunion in the months preceding her death. She enjoyed traveling extensively with her husband, including several trips to Europe, numerous cruises, and domestic destinations (her favorite being San Francisco)¯oftentimes to visit her children. Virginia is survived by her husband of 54 years, J. Nicholas Dudley, MD of Albuquerque and her four children and their families: James N. Dudley, Jr. and wife, Tonimarie; Kemper Dudley of San Francisco, California; Lt. Col. Robert Dudley, (USAF retired) of Memphis, Tennessee; and Carol Boswell and husband, Greg of Dayton, Ohio. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ryan and Zachary Dudley of Albuquerque: Laura and Scott Dudley of Hampton, Virginia; and Lucas Boswell, of Dayton, Ohio. Other survivors include her brother, Robert Decker of Brookfield, Vermont; a cousin, Winfield Baird of Birmingham, Alabama; and close friend, Douglas Bond of San Francisco, California. A Memorial Service will be held at the same location on Friday, November 15, 2002 at 2:00 p.m., with the Reverend Larry Moss officiating. French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming NE, is in charge of arrangements.
