Obituary for Almes

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday November 21, 2002

Guy Cecil Almes, 77, died peacefully of cancer, on Monday, November 18, 2002. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Adam Huber, and is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gladys Stewart Almes, his brothers, Carrol T. Almes and John R. Almes; his daughter, Cecilia Louise Almes; his two sons Guy T. Almes and Clifford J. Almes (a.k.a. Brother Timothy); and by his four grandsons Joshua Huber, Caleb Huber, Jordan Almes, and Hardy Almes. A native of Baltimore, he flew 35 missions over Europe during WWII, and was privileged to serve with many outstanding people for an Air Force career totaling 31 years and rising eventually to the rank of Colonel. Retiring in 1974, he and Gladys moved to Albuquerque, partly to be near her family, many of whom live in Grants. Blessed by family, he was also blessed as a charter member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, serving in many capacities of lay leadership. He mentored many young people in their faith life, and was referred to as"Gum Guy" by the young children of Holy Cross. His retirement was also enriched by several years of graduate work in religious studies at UNM. An avid and adept golfer throughout his life, he scored in the 70s for many years, and shared his love and skill with his grandsons, who were the light of his life. While in Albuquerque, he was proud to volunteer for many years with The Storehouse, with St. Martin's Hospitality Center, and more recently as a tutor at E. G. Ross Elementary School and as a tax preparer for AARP. Services will be held on Saturday, November 23rd at 10:30 am at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions may be made either to the Memorial Fund of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 6901 Wyoming NE, Albuquerque 87109, or to The Storehouse, 106 Broadway Blvd. SE,Albuquerque 87102.
