Mrs. Lawrence T. Abraham, devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, passed away Thursday, November 14, 2002. She died peacefully at home surrounded by family after being cared for by her devoted husband. The former Wadette Goze, a native New Mexican, born October 2, 1916 in Magdelena, NM to a prominent ranching family George and Adele Goze. She was preceeded in death by her parents and sister Margaret. Mrs. Abraham graduated from El Paso Business College and earned her Teaching Certificate from UNM in 1938. She taught school in Magdalena in the late 1930's. On a trip to the 1939 New York World's Fair she met her future husband, Lawrence T. Abraham, married October 6, 1940 and began a love affair lasting 63 years. The Abrahams lived in Magdalena, Espanola and resided in Los Alamos from 1942 to 1946. While in Los Alamos she was instrumental in starting the USO and served as its president. In 1946, the Abrahams with their daughters moved to Santa Fe and resided there until 1976. While in Santa Fe she attended First Presbyterian Church, served as President of the Dig N Hope Club Garden Club, served on the State Board of Garden Clubs, President of the Stitch N Bitch Club, Chairperson of the March of Dimes, Girl Scout Leader, served as President of the Santa Fe City Council, Secretary/Treasurer of Lawrence T. Abraham Construction, Mother Advisor of the Rainbow Girls and was named Santa Fe Woman of the Year in 1970. Mr. & Mrs. Abraham moved to Albuquerque in 1976. While in Albuquerque she continued her civic activities and focused on her love of writing poetry and painting. Wadette is a chartered member of the Tom L. Popejoy Society at UNM. She is survived by her devoted husband and companion, Lawrence; loving daughter Sandra Dhieux and her husband, Ernie, of Broomfield Co.; their children Joyel Dhieux of Boulder Co., and Matthew Dhieux of Broomfield Co.; Loving daughter Dr. Karen Abraham of Albuquerque, long time administrator of the University of New Mexico; and loving son, Larry, his wife, Beverly, and their son, Geoffrey, all of Albuquerque. Wadette's greatest success and focus of her life was her family. She was devoted to her husband Lawrence and doted on her children and grandchildren. The incredible loss of her presence is balanced only by the lasting example and legacy of her amazing energy, love of life and the commitment she brought to her life's role of wife, mother, friend and humanitarian. Her strength and love of life left a lasting impact on everyone she met. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Sunday, November 24th at 1 pm at the UNM Alumni Chapel, Rev. Ned Ross officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence T. and Wadette Abraham Endowment Scholarship, UNM Foundation/Development Office 700 Lomas Blvd., NE Suite 203, Albuquerque NM 87131.
