Obituary for Mechem

New Mexico lost one of its treasured citizens. Edwin L. Mechem, born July 2, 1912, in Alamogordo, New Mexico, passed away at his home on Wednesday evening. He served four terms as Governor of New Mexico, served as United States Senator and United States District Judge since 1970. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Josephine; daughter, Martha Vigil; sons John and Walter; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and Josephine's children, Ann Galloway Leigh, Beth Galloway Horyna and Christin Galloway Dobbeck. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his son, Jesse; Josephine's son, John; and granddaughter, Jennifer. The family has requested a private funeral. A public memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the Old Airport Terminal. Exit onto Sunpor Blvd. Go South on University to George, East on George to the Terminal. Airport Parking, located at 1501 Aircraft Ave, has kindly donated parking and shuttle service to the terminal. It is suggested that drivers drop off passengers at the terminal before parking. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jesse Mechem Scholarship Fund at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell or the Jesse Mechem Scholarship Fund at New Mexico State University Foundation in Las Cruces or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
