Obituary for Burns

Preston Edward Burns, 18, a resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, November 28, 2002.¯ Born in Albuquerque on October 18, 1984, he attended schools in Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Albuquerque and San Jose, CA. He recently received his GED, and he was currently enrolled at TVI where he intended to pursue a degree in Culinary Arts.¯His dream was to own a restaurant. Preston was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 13.¯Diabetes is a cruel master that took Preston not piece by piece but whole, as he stood on the threshold of adult promise.¯In 8th grade, he volunteered for Youth Development, Inc. His potential was recognized by YDI when his portrait was selected for their 1998 calendar; his picture (with bleached hair) appeared for the month of May. Preston is remembered for his sense of humor and diverse interests. He regularly experimented with his¯look particularly his hair. He enjoyed spending time with his many friends.¯ He liked cats, reptiles, alternative music, and reading.¯ He had a very sensitive nature. His younger cousins adored him.¯He had a great time on the family's recent cruise to Alaska. He assisted the cruise chefs in a cooking demonstration and documented his adventures on a digital camera.¯His family treasures this time spent together.¯Preston is survived by his loving and caring mother, Susan (Suzi) Burns; and his¯Auntie B,¯ Barbara Grothus, both of Albuquerque; uncles and aunts, Tom Grothus and Wendy Slotboom of Seattle, WA and Mike and Heidi Grothus and their children, Casey and Michelle (MEG) of Niwot, CO; Poppa and Grandma,¯Ed and Margaret Grothus of Los Alamos, NM; grandmother, Ruth Davis and family of Wilmington, NC; and many members of his extended family.¯ He was preceded in death by uncle, Ted Grothus. The family wishes to express deepest gratitude to Preston's long-time mentor, Bill Bordone, of Wise Men, Wise Women, for his unswerving 10-year dedication to Preston.¯We also wish to acknowledge Leslie and Randy Bush for their commitment to his recent successes.¯Services will be held Saturday, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE.¯Friends are encouraged to bring their memories to share with his family.¯A reception will follow at the Rio Grande Cantina, 901 Rio Grande NW. Graveside services and interment will be held 3:30 p.m., at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos.¯A reception will follow.
