Obituary for Scarberry

Phyllis S. Scarberry, a resident of San Marino, California since 1962, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2002 in Albuquerque. Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1921, she was a member of the San Marino Community Church, a member of the Pacific Railroad society, and a member of the Ohio State University Alumni and the Delta-Delta-Delta Sorority. In college at Ohio State University, Phyllis was president of the Women's Self-Governing Association and a member of Mortar Board. Phyllis touched many people's lives in deep and abiding ways. Her care, compassion, and interest in others, coupled with her quick wit and openness of character, gave her the ability to sustain vital lifelong bonds with her family and many friends. Phyllis had exceptional talents and qualities, including having been a schoolteacher, an avid reader and gardener, a fine photographer and a seamstress, a formidable scrabble and bridge player and an enthusiastic world traveler. Her passions included the arts, music, history, trains, cars, and team sports. Phyllis was preceded in death by her father, John H. Swoyer and aunt, Meta M. Barthman, as well as her husband, William F. Scarberry. Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Dr. Susan Scarberry-Garcia of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Janet Nura S. Stone, and Janet's husband, Aaron Stone, of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Additionally, Phyllis is survived by her granddaughters, Lana Garcia and Tania Garcia of Colorado Springs. Phyllis most enjoyed spending time with her family on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. She loved the land of Kauai, especially Sealodge, Princeville and Hanalei Bay where beauty spreads in all directions. A Memorial Service will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2002 at Schoedinger Funeral Home NW Chapel 1740 Zollinger Rd., Columbus, OH 43221.
