Obituary for Stone

Oliver P. Stone, formally known as Philip Andrew Pukas born August 9, 1938, passed away December 19, 2001, after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by this father, Andrew Pukas; mother, Mary Fauer Pukas; and brother, Paul Pukas. He leaves behind his two loving sons, Andrew Hermer and Nicholas Grace-Stone; brother, Edward Pukas; and life-long friend, Marilyn V. Ginny Grace; and also many friends. Oliver earned his BA in English at Roosevelt University, Chicago Il., his MA in English Literature at State University of New York at Buffalo. He taught English at SUNY and also at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, and was a journalist for the Berkeley Barb. Oliver served the in U. S. Navy and was honorably discharged due to an injury. After moving to New Mexico, he worked for KHFM and KUNM radio stations. For many years he was a self employed mechanic and yoga instructor and full time father to his youngest son, Nick. Oliver's love of music helped him through many troubled times, and is still remembered today. He gave of himself in so many ways, through his music, through his friends, family and through his students. Amoung his many gifts he donated many hours of his life as a volunteer; the NM Jazz Workshop, United Way, and the Cathedral Church of St John, were just a few. In his later years, Oliver was employed at TVI Special Services and was also a substitute teacher for APS. A Memorial Service and Holy Communion will be held on December 29, 2001 at 10:00 a.m., the Cathedral Church of St John, 318 Silver SW, Alb. NM, in the Chapel of The Beloved Saints. Cremation has taken place. Ennichment of the ashes in the Cathedral garden will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, friends and family may make a contribution to the Cathedral in Oliver's memory.
