Obituary for Eckhardt

Carl H. Eckhardt, 81, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past 5 years, formerly of Jackson Township, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, September 12, 2001. Carol was born April 25, 1920 the son of Carl and Jessie Stilley Eckhardt in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He graduated from Kankakee High School in Kankakee, Illinois where he was active in sports and was the Manager of the Track Team. Carl was drafted into the US Navy in 1944 and served on the USS Bennion. While serving on the USS Bennion he received a Presidential Unit Citation from President Truman. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946, he worked for the NYC Railroad. While working for the railroad, he met his wife, Trudy. She was a regular commuter on the train. He then worked as a painter for the Gary Indiana School System for 30 years. He was very active in the Painters Union Local #8 and held various offices in the Union. Carl was a part-time Deputy Sheriff for the Porter County Sheriff's Dept. for six years and then was hired full-time as Jail Transportation Officer until he retired"again" in May 1986. He was a member of the Seabee Reserve Unit 9-38 in Gary, Indiana in 1955 and retired as a BUG (Chief Petty Officer) in 1980. He was a member of the Rio Rancho Moose Lodge #2447 and the Fleet Reserve Assoc., Branch 200 of Albuquerque. Carl is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Trudy Eckhardt of Rio Rancho, NM; son, Gregory L. Eckhardt and wife, Diane of Valparaiso, IN, and daughter, Carole L. Zimmerman and husband, John of Rio Rancho, NM; two grandchildren, Michael and Megan Eckhardt of Valparaiso, IN. The Memorial Service for Carl will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2001 at 5:30 p.m. at the St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 601 Montano Rd. NW, Albuquerque, NM with the Rev. Brian C. Taylor and The Rev. Sandra S. Bess officiating. Interment will be in the Rose Garden in Vista Verde Memorial Park. It has been suggested that memorial contributions be made to St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 601 Montano Rd. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87107, or the American Cancer Society, Southwest Division, Inc., Albuquerque Region, P.O.
