Obituary for Byrd

Robert L. Byrd, Sr.,"Bob", 79, passed away Sunday, September 9, 2001 at Sandia Hospice, after a long battle with a neurological disease. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Pat Byrd of the family home; sons, Robert L. Byrd, Jr."Boby" and wife, Marvalee of Mesa, AZ, Stephen Byrd and wife, LouAnne of Albuquerque, Thomas Byrd and wife, Valerie of Amarillo, TX; daughters, Sue Kline, Anita Valentine and husband, Doug, Helen Knee and husband, Steve, and Deanna Byrd-Thompson, all of Albuquerque, Mary Pat (Sugar) Varbel and husband, Ray of Los Lunas, NM, Nancy Moke and husband, Will of San Antonio, TX, Vicki Schmahl and husband, Pete of Littleton, CO, and Cathy Melloy and husband, Dan of Tijeras, NM; 47 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Byrd and five grandchildren. Mr. Byrd lived in Albuquerque for 46 years with a five-year residency in Los Lunas. He was employed by Sandia Laboratories for 33 years as a Security Inspector. Mr. Byrd served as Secretary Treasurer, Vice President, and President of the International Guards Union of America for several years and was Regional Director of Region 6. He served as Staff Sergeant in the US Army Air Corps during WWII in the Asiatic Theater of Operation on a B24 as an engineer and gunner. Mr. Byrd received the Good Conduct Medal, The Air Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, and Victory Medal. He also served in the Aleutians. Mass will be celebrated Thursday, September 13, 2001, 10:00 a.m., at Holy Ghost Church, 833 Arizona SE, with Father Rick Zerwas, Celebrant. Interment will take place at 1:00 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to Sandia Hospice, 4775 Indian School Rd.
