Obituary for Harms

Leon G. Harms passed away February 9, 2001 at 5:45 p.m. at home in Sacramento, CA. His daughter, Lise MacNinch of Durango, CO and loving companion, Barbara Parkin were with him to help him on his journey. He was born on April 9, 1923 in Hillsboro, KS to Leon H. and Pauline (Kaul) Harms. The family relocated to Albuquerque, NM in 1932. He graduated from Trinity University in Texas with a degree in Education. As a Reveue Officer with the IRS for 22 years, he became part of the original faculty of the National Training Center in Virginia. He married and divorced twice. In addition to his daughter, Lise, he leaves his other children, Leslie Lites of Truth or Consequences, Leon H. and Lawrence R. Harms of Santa Fe, NM, and Laura Kinker of Durango, CO; he also has six grandchildren, Daniel Wright, Alexis Trevino, Ariel and Rena Harms, Danielle and Kody Kinker; Leon's brother, Paul H. Harms and families live in Albuquerque; and his sister, Joan Dismuke, who preceded him in death by four days, lived in Sandia Park, NM and her children live in the area as well. Leon's interests were many and varied. He loved books, writing stories and traveling. Combining these, he pursued his family history and published three books. He belonged to East Bay Genealogy Society and Genealogy Society of Sacramento. He enjoyed all kinds of music from opera to Dixieland with musicals and concerts in between. He belonged to Alameda Jazz Society and for a time Sacramento Traditional jazz Society. Caring so much for the land and history he belonged to several environmental organizations. Leon requested no Services but his ashes will be interred in Mt. View Cemetery, Oakland, CA at a later date. His family and friends bid him a fond farewell. He was loved and will be missed!
