Obituary for Dougherty

Margaret June Stewart Dougherty, age 69, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2001 at Valley Memorial Hospital, Pleasanton, CA. She was born August 7, 1931 in Seattle, WA. She moved with her mother, the former Margaret Judith Hall, to Moscow, ID in 1938. Her mother married Hylas M. Stewart. He was the father of two sons, William Albert and Robert Mason, and subsequently adopted Margaret. Margaret graduated from Moscow High School in 1949, and received a BS in Education from the University of Idaho in 1953. She and Robert C. Dougherty were married on June 6, 1953. Robert was a newly commissioned Naval Officer and they made their first home in California where Robert's ship was stationed. She started as an elementary teacher in the San Diego school system. Throughout her career of nearly 30 years she taught primarily in the first and second grades. She loved to teach children and was a strong advocate of basics, primarily reading. As the family moved around, she worked in Moscow, ID, Albuquerque, NM, Livermore, CA, and Dublin, CA. She supported her Alpha Chi Omega sorority and belonged to AAUW. Her hobbies included bridge, reading, gardening, bird watching, camping and travel. Travels with her family took her throughout the US and much of Europe. She was particularly attracted to England. In later years she discovered genealogy and became an avid enthusiast. She belonged to several genealogy clubs. Her research took her across the US and as far away as Ireland. Survivors include her husband of 48 years; her son, Robert Patrick and wife, Wilma Ann of Bellevue, WA; her daughter, Sarah Anne and husband, John Barmen of Elk Grove, IL; her two grandchildren, John Robert Dougherty Barmen and Katherine Margaret Barmen; and her two sisters-in-law, Virginia Stewart and Caroline Stewart. She was preceded in death by her father (1966); mother (1985); and brothers, Robert (1991) and William (1999). Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at Callaghan Mortuary, 3833 East Ave., Livermore, CA 94550. Telephone (925)447-2942. Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at St. Raymond Catholic Church, 11555 Shannon Ave, Dublin, CA. She will be interred at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Livermore. The family suggests memorials be donations to The American Lung Association or Shepherd's Gate, 1639 Portola Ave, Livermore, CA 94550. A memorial is planned in Albuquerque later.
