Ronald Errol Schmidt, 68, a resident of Albuquerque since 1994, died Tuesday, October 9, 2001, after a battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, of 39 years, Myrtle Lee of Ferriday, Louisiana; and their two daughters, Lisa Lee Schmidt of Dallas, TX and Maria Schmidt Stevens of Albuquerque; and son-in-law, Brent Stevens. He was the loving and cherished grandfather of Hank and Emma Stevens. He is also survived by his older brother, Kenneth Schmidt of New York City, NY. Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, he was a graduate of Fortier High School and Loyola University. He served his country in the Army during the Korean War in Germany as part of the 4th and 10th Med Labs, and attended seven Army reunions over the past 25 years. He worked at LSU Medical School where he met his wife who was also working there. He owned and operated the Cytology Diagnostic Laboratory in New Orleans for 27 years. He was one of the first cytotechnologists in the nation. He also taught the science of cytotechnology to 55 students at Charity Hospital. After retiring from medicine, he worked for his cousins at Lagasse Brothers, and later at a New Orleans cup factory, a job he truly enjoyed. He was an active member of the Lafayette Elementary School Dad's Club and the Broadmoor Improvement Association throughout the 1970's. He was lifelong lover of classical music and had become an excellent cook in his retirement. A prolific artist, he showed his work in a French Quarter gallery for several years, selling numerous paintings. He often made up whimsical stories for his children and grandchildren, and loved to go fishing with one of his best friends, Ted Fuchs. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and especially enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, who lovingly called him"Papa". A Memorial Service will be held Saturday for family only.
