Nancy (Carrigan) Blankfield. Nancy, born January 20, 1928, departed this life April 19, 2001 following a long struggle with cardio-pulmonary disease. A native of Philadelphia, PA she had resided in Belen, NM for 27 years. She is survived by her husband of almost 52 years, Col. Wm. H. Blankfield Jr, USAF (Ret), of the home; son, Peter and daughter-in-Iaw, Deborah of Tucson, AZ; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends in various parts of the country. Following graduation from West Catholic High School For Girls in Philadelphia, she worked for THE EVENING BULLETIN in that city until her marriage in 1949. She spent over 20 years as an Air Force wife, serving at several AF Bases in the U. S. and installations in Newfoundland, Spain and Thailand. It fell to her to keep the family together and organized during numerous moves and the absences of her husband, tasks she performed exceedingly well. She was also very active in social and civic activities, often in leadership roles. She was key to whatever successes her husband achieved. Shortly after arrival in NM, Nancy became a member of the St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary. She worked every service and was especially effective in managing internal hospital blood drives. Her hard work and supportive nature were rewarded when she was elected Auxiliary President for the 1984-85 business year. During the course of her nearly 20 years service at St. Joseph she made many friendships which endured until her passing. III health forced her to cease volunteer work earlier than she would have liked. Nancy will be sorely missed. A Memorial Service will be held at the St. Joseph Hospital Chapel at 11AM, Tuesday, 24 April, in conjunction with the scheduled Mass. Friends are cordially invited . In lieu of flowers or other remembrances, it is Nancy's wish that donations be made to either the St. Joseph Health Care Foundation or Sandia Hospice.
