Obituary for Zimmerman

John E. Zimmerman, 55, of Rio Rancho, passed away suddenly on Saturday, October 13, 2001. John was born January 29, 1946 in Hammond, Indiana. He was a 1964 graduate of Boone Grove High School in Porter Twp, Indiana. He worked for Illinois Bell, Indiana Bell and A.T. & T. Information Systems for a total of 22 years. John was a part-time deputy sheriff for Lake County Indiana Sheriff's Department and later Porter County Sheriff's Department. He was hired as a full time Police Officer for the Porter County Sheriff's Police Department in 1988 and was a graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1989. John helped coordinate the Governor's Task Force for Drunk Driving while employed with the Sheriff's Department. John was recruited by a Sandia National Laboratory contractor (P.D.S.) in 1996. John and his wife relocated to Rio Rancho, New Mexico in March of 1996. John was an employee of ReSpec, as a UNIX Systems Administrator for the Infrastructure Computing group. John was a member of Fraternal Order of Police, Albuquerque Lodge #1, the treasurer and a charter member of Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Association, New Mexico Chapter #VI, former member of Blue Knights New Mexico #1 and a member of the Rio Rancho Moose Lodge, #2447, Santa Fe Harley Owners Group, and Goldwing Road Riders Association. John served as the chapter educator of GWRRA New Mexico Chapter F and later the Senior District Educator for GWRRA in New Mexico. John was a Master Tour Rider of Goldwing Road Riders Association since 1994. John was also a member of the New Mexico Corvette Association. John was a life member of the National Rifle Association. He was a past member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Ewalt Yahnz Lodge in Porter County, Indiana. John was a member of the Porter County Sheriff's Police Pistol Team and won several national medals and numerous state awards for police pistol combat shooting. He was also a former member of the Electrical Workers Local 336. He was a precinct committeeman, Morgan Township, for the Porter County Republican Party Twp. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Elsie Annen, and Albert and Ina Zimmerman and his father-in-law, Carl Eckhardt. John is survived by his loving wife, Carole of over 26 years, his parents, Frank and Lorraine Zimmerman of Hebron, Indiana, his mother-in-law, Trudy Eckhardt of Rio Rancho, sister, Mary Jo Noffinger and her husband, Harold of Valley, AL., son, John, of Naples, FL., brother-in-law, Gregory and his wife, Diane of Valparaiso, IN.; and nephews and nieces. John is also survived by many dear friends including his closest friends, Wayne and Pat Connolly. John will be sorely missed by his loving family and his many dear friends and co-workers. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, October 22, 2001 at 5:00 p.m. at St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church with The Rev. Sandra S. Bess and The Rev. Brian C. Taylor officiating. Interment will be at the Rose Garden in Vista Verde Memorial Park on Tuesday, October 23, 2001, 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the spouse toward a memorial and donations to charities of her choice would be appreciated.
