Obituary for Stuart

Charles Z. Stuart, 84, long time resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday February 21, 2001 after a brief illness. Born in Las Vegas, NM on October 24, 1916, he was the son of Anna Mae and Charles Zadoc Stuart. Charlie grew up in the coal mining communities of Van Houten, Swastika, and Brilliant near Raton, NM where his father was the butcher for the St. Louis, Rocky Mountain and Pacific Company. Graduating from Las Vegas High School in 1935, Charlie attended Normal University in Las Vegas before working for Standard Oil Company from 1936-1943 and again in 1945-1947, working in Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Gallup and Carlsbad. Charlie served as a Marine in World War II, stationed near Vallejo, CA. Returning to Albuquerque in 1947, Charlie was an aircraft mechanic for Carco, an air courier service in Albuquerque, which flew to Los Alamos, NM and Oakridge, TN. He worked at Manzano Base prior to his long career as a technician at Sandia National Laboratories from 1952-1980, his last position being in the Physical Standards Division, 2551, before retirement. Charlie loved to tinker, whether as a mechanic, carpenter, building scale model airplanes or HO series model trains, to recording music, and refinishing gunstocks. He loved the outdoors and fulfilled a long time dream to build a summer home in La Junta Canyon near Tres Ritos, NM, in the early to mid 1960's, spending of his leisure time in the canyon for more than 20 years. Always lending a hand, Charlie served on several Boards in the residential community. Charlie will always be remembered for his compassion, inquisitive nature, willingness to help and his humor. He was preceded in death by Fern, his first wife of 58 years, son, Dan, his parents, sister, Dorothy, and his niece, Dorothy Ann McEnroe. Charile is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; and extended family; his daughter, Nancy Stuart of Albuquerque; his grandsons, Joshua C. Stuart of Seattle, WA and Jonathan D. Stuart of Lemon Grove, CA; and great nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held Saturday, 2:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, 4th and Lead SW, with Rev. Ira Williams officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1638, 87103 or a charity of your choice.
